He or she is usually assisted by other crew members, such as service attendants or porters. During the heyday of North American passenger rail travel, long distance trains carried two conductors: the aforementioned train conductor, and a Pullman conductor, the latter being in charge of sleeping car personnel.

Re: Chillin with Barry Whyte from IBM

Nigel, could you please check the podcast feeds as this episode doesn't appear in iTunes or the Podbean feeds?

Re: Chillin with Barry Whyte from IBM

Great chat Nigel, next time lets sort out the sound quality - skype headset hear we come!

Re: RAIDing a Planet Sized Brain

So the podcast is excellent, there is just one HUGE problem. I miss the guy...)

Assuming that the software is feature complete and performs well compared to the EMCs and Hitachis of the industry, the gorilla in the room is still this: How can you expect an IT department to build, using off the shelf components from IBM or HP, a clustered storage controller with surrounding network infrastructure, which can match or exceed the availability of any decent storage system of today?

In all honestly I do believe that Microsoft for a minute thinks that their storage server is comparable to a Clariion or 3par system. So I guess this is another example of the classic Microsoft near truth technical marketing.

Re: RAIDing a Planet Sized Brain

podcast not working... just says "error opening file"

Re: Windows Server 8: Is it for real?

Thanks for the clarification.Nice post.

Re: HDS – Apparently More Than Just Big Iron Storage

Have you officially taken over for Mark and Greg?

Re: What Makes Something “Enterprise”

Thanks Nigel for great podcasts coming thru.. :)Spot on “high price” - $200K plus stating range for enterprise storage. It should be from business to technology ? Worth looking at what “Enterprise” means in business today, if business definition has changed over time, technology should follow and how argument.Cheers !

Re: Smackdown 2 – Its Quiz Time Again

Hey Rick, check the spelling, its Greg Schulz (e.g. no "t" aka not "Schultz" ;)...
Will try and stay away while listening.
Cheers
gs

Re: Storage Protocols

Here you go, SMB 2.2 and NAS support for hyper-v 3.0

http://communities.netapp.c...

Re: Odds and SODs

So much could have been covered in different areas or nits...

Re: Odds and SODs

Greg - I was specifically talking about Ethernet switching (L2/L3) ASICs - Marvell, Fulcrum Micro and Broadcom are the off-the-shelf suppliers. Cisco and Brocade make their own. Ciena and F5 are networking vendors, but it is nit the core networking space.

Re: Odds and SODs

Stu you say that Cisco and Brocade are left developing custom ASICs?

You are kidding right, or, are you simply putting the scope and context around FC/SAN interconnect related?

Move out away from port pieces that Brocade and Cisco play in and you will find other custom ASICs in a broad range of storage, networking and consumer products.

In fact, there is a very high probability that what ever you used to make your post, or respond to this one will have custom ASICs involved.

Now if your focus is around just Ethernet switches, have you talked with the Ciena's, Fujitsu (e.g. carrier side of their house) among others? How about Mellanox or some of the other startups not to mention existing players dabbling in the converged space? Cracked open a low cost commodity Ethernet switch and look at the chip sets inside lately?

As too why for a 1/2 hour discussion no Ethernet, we only had a half hour and there were many other ASIC areas that we could have gone in addition to Ethernet including PCIe items, SSD and HDD ASICs, adapters, handsets, serdes, packet inspection, dsp etc etc etc etc etc...

Hope all is well.Cheers
gs

Re: Odds and SODs

Stu,

Thanks for the comment. You're right about missing an op re merchant silicon. Now that you mention it Im staggered that none of us thought to bring it in to the conversation.

Im sure we'll discuss it in a future show.

Thanks for lsitening

Re: Odds and SODs

Deep thoughts guys - hey @nigelpoulton how could you discuss commodity for 1/2 hr without discussing the merchant silicon wave for Ethernet switches? Intel recently bought Fulcrum Micro (which competes with Marvell and Broadcom) with only Cisco and Brocade left developing custom ASICs. My roots are probably too much in hardware as I would separate the commodity discussion from the open source or "standard" software where your conversation went. Ray and Greg definitely are amazing sources of information on the depths of storage.

Re: Infosmack Deep Dive: Is Flash a flash in the pan

From the semiconductor products side, this was bollocks from 1995. Fair analysis. I wanted to clarify some points that were made:

1 - If any of your listeners would like to test-drive the Cisco UCS, they can download the free UCS Emulator (runs as a VM) for free from our developer site - http://developer.cisco.com/...

2 - If any of your listeners would like to view how UCS works, here is an excellent set of educational videos/demos - http://www.cisco.com/en/US/...

3 - While UCS Manager (UCSM) does use Java, it is just a Java implementation of an interface that resides on top of the UCS API. Customers (Ent/SP) could write an entirely new interface on top of the API in the language they prefer. We provide a tool (goUCS) that provides developers with access to all the API commands and syntax for any add-on or replacement tools they wish to create. All of this is available (free) at http://developer.cisco.com/.... And as was mentioned on the show, Powershell support will be out of Beta very soon. We're already seeing people write unique interfaces for UCS, such as this iPhone app - http://blogs.cisco.com/data...

4 - There seemed to be concern about which team would manage Cisco UCS, since it combines Server/Network/Storage into a unified system. The UCSM allows role-based access to the system such that individual teams could be given permissions to setup/manage specific functions (eg. Storage provisioning). So the system doesn't force a customer to retrain or reorganize their IT groups to fit the system.

5 - The scale/simplicity of UCS Manager wasn't really discussed on the show. This is a unique design that will significantly help operations teams, as they can manage 20+ chassis from a single interface, without added mamagement in each chassis. This significantly reduces the points of management, points of failure, costs of management and simplifies moves/adds/changes/upgrades.

6 - There was a question about roadmaps and next-generations of Cisco UCS. Here is an excellent write-up for UCSM 2.0, which will be available very soon - http://www.mseanmcgee.com/2...

We're glad to hear that UCS has peaked your interest (at least for Nigel) and that you've also expressed interest in learning more about Nexus 1000v and the added functionality it can bring to virtualized Data Centers. If you'd like to speak with people in more depth about these products, please feel free to contact us (@ciscoDC).

Re: Infosmack Podcast #102 – Burgers and Bullets

Hi, My download link on this page points to episode 088???

Re: Infosmack Podcast #92 – HDS and Virtualization

Hi.
